WILL GILBERT RIESLING AWARDS UP AND COMING WINEMAKER INTERNATIONAL RIESLING CHALLENGE

Gilbert Family Wines brought home a swag of medals from the Canberra International Riesling Challenge, but the award that has the family company beaming with pride is the International Riesling Challenge Encouragement Award for Up & Coming Australian Young Winemakers, won by Will Gilbert.

The six-generation winemaker, whose Great Great Great Granfather Joseph Gilbert planted the original Eden Valley Vineyard in Pewsey Vale in 1847, seemed destined to make great Riesling the moment he stepped foot into the cellar at age of 10 and decided winemaking was his future, following in his father, Simon's steps.

In the years since then, Will has become obsessed with the variety seeking out top fruit from across Australia (Orange, Eden Valley and Canberra District) to create Rieslings that cover a range of styles including dry, off-dry, botrytis and even a Pétillant-naturel (natural sparkling) whilst being true to the site and the fruit. His knack for finding harmonious balance across these styles is uncanny.

Will has also sought to hone his craft with international experience in Canada and Europe.

Will now sits among some great young talent, past winners of the award include Stephanie Helm (Helm and The Vintner’s Daughter) and Tom Barry (Jim Barry Wines).
